Where your family comes from

From the last generations back to prehistory, in a few minutes, starting from your birthplace and your parents'.

A DNA test places you within two or three centuries. Millenage goes back to the peoples who lived before farming.

How it works

From your home town to ten thousand years back

You enter your birthplace and those of both your parents, your skin tone and theirs. If you know them, you can add your grandparents, your great-grandparents and a family name: every detail makes the result sharper. Allow a few minutes.

Millenage then works through the history of populations, how they migrated and mixed, to follow your family century after century. The calculation draws on published work: DNA taken from ancient remains, and the documented history of peoples.

At the end you have your major regions of origin with their percentages, the names of the peoples your family lived among in each era, and the dates.

How we know it works

We hid the answer from the calculation

The measurements in detail
9/10
families whose main origin was correctly recovered
22,305
ancient individuals whose DNA has been sequenced and published by researchers
243
documented countries: every inhabited country on earth, each with its own written page

We took 81 families whose origin was already known, without giving that origin to the calculation. It recovered the right main origin for nine in ten. Of the 25 families it never saw while it was being tuned, it still gets eight in ten.

It goes wrong most often with families whose two sides come from very distant worlds: two strong origins compete for first place, and it can name the wrong one. On those it is right 6 times in 10, against 9 for the rest.

Millenage: we recover 82% of what the test reports, on 8 people

That last figure comes from 8 public figures whose DNA test was made public, all of them born in the United States. That is the hardest case for us: there, a birthplace says almost nothing about where a family came from. When a family stayed in its region, we recover 90% of what the test reports, on 3 people. When it was born of the great migrations, a DNA test does better than we do.

The preview of your origins is free and asks for no credit card. The full past costs €29.99: all your regions, the peoples era by era, the journey and the report to keep. The future of your lineage costs €14.99, and both together €35.99.
